You should know before taking your animals to Pet Surgery Center of Fort Lauderdale…
Summary: Pet Surgery Center of Fort Lauderdale (I’ll refer to as PSC) performed oral surgery on my great dane Duke and the results look ghastly. After I took him to another vet and this seemed to really upset PSC. They withheld surgeries for my other dogs that prevent GDV and pyometra, both very deadly conditions. One day after I posted a critical review on Google and Facebook, 3 cops wake me up at night to perform a “wellfare check” on my dogs.
Duke went to PSC for dental cleaning and gum overgrowth surgery. After it was completed, his gums ended up far below the natural gum line. Even after weeks of recovery time there are ugly gray regions where the gums previously were and they bleed at the slightest touch. It also smells foul. I brush his teeth daily to prevent infection now that his teeth are so exposed to bacteria. Do you see how far up the pink healthy tissue is?
I also took Duke to PSC to get an ultrasound by an internal medicine specialist because he has an enlarged prostate (BPH). The specialist said in her report that a drug called finasteride can be used to treat this condition. Dr. Steele (a general vet) and Theresa (who attends the front desk) disagreed with their own specialist and strongly insisted that I get him castrated. I took Duke to another vet who after examining him agreed with the specialist and prescribed finasteride. It worked really well and all of his prostate symptoms have resolved.
Later, I contacted PSC to schedule spay and gastropexy surgeries for my other great danes. I did that because great danes as a breed are at very high risk for pyometra and GDV, and those surgeries prevent those conditions. Both can develop suddenly and are deadly medical emergencies. Studies estimate that 62% of great danes will get pyometra and 37% will get GDV in their lifetime. After I went to another vet with Duke, PSC refused to perform the spay and gastropexy and referred to Duke’s situation. Duke wasn’t under their care at the time and he had nothing to do with my other dog’s surgeries. It seems to me that PSC was trying to extort me to force their treatment plan upon Duke, and using the risk on my other dog’s lives to accomplish that.
Instead, I started seeking another surgeon for my dogs. I posted a critical review about PSC on Google and Facebook. I thought now the bad experience with PSC was behind me. The next day, I get woken up at night by police. They tell me to come outside and that they need me to prove that my dogs are okay. They referred by name specifically to the dogs that PSC was harassing me about. By this time, PSC hasn’t seen my dogs in about 2 months and it wasn’t until one day after the reviews were posted that the police arrive? What kind of dog owner is looking to spend many thousands of dollars on surgeries for problems that haven’t even happened yet?
